Some examples of PREP’s green practices include: Shopping bags: Our bags are made from 100% recycled, unbleached, no-ink paper, can be reused many times over, then as 100% biodegradable, compostable trash bags Garbage Bags for Cooking Classes: The garbage bags we use in our cooking classes are 100% biodegradable and compostable.
The paper towels, napkins, printer paper and toilet tissue we use are made from 100% recycled paper.
Cooking Class Recycling: We strive to recycle 100% of the glass, plastic and other recyclable items used by instructors and participants in our cooking classes (this includes the many, many wine bottles enjoyed by our customers).
Dishwashing: Our commercial dishwasher uses just 1.5 gallons of water to wash a load. And because it has a build-in heater/sanitizer, we can do several loads with one cycle of water.
Merchandise packaging: We strive to recycle 100% of the cardboard and paper used in the shipments of our merchandise. We reuse 100% of the Styrofoam peanuts received. We are constantly contacting vendors who use outdated shipping practices asking them to step into the 21st century!
Green Products: Several of our manufacturers have excellent green policies including: Mrs Meyers – 100% biodegradable cleaning products. No Styrofoam used in shipping ECS – Cutting boards made from environmentally safe methods. No Styrofoam used in shipping. Scandi Crafts – Wooden products made from highly renewable and sustainable wood sources.
Made in America brands: Good for the economy, reduces shipping distances, less global warming All Clad, Mrs Meyers, ECS, Chilewich, Nordicware, Heavenly Hostess aprons, Lamson, Mary Lake Thompson linens, Microplane, Duncan Kitchen Grips, Ed Wohl, Oilcloth, RMI cookie cutters, Maine Sea Salt, California Olive Ranch, McCutcheons jams, Dover.
PREP’s sparing use of boxes, wrapping paper, bows and ribbons: It is estimated that this Christmas as much as 250 square miles of wrapping paper will end up in rubbish bins in the United States - enough to cover an area nearly one fifth the size of the state of Rhode Island. Christmas boxes and packing materials will take up an area nearly twice that size. Most of this paper and cardboard is not recycled or made from sustainable timber. Some of it comes from ancient rain forests where 100 species become extinct every day due to tropical deforestation.
PREP would like to do what it to help cut down on this waste and is wrapping gifts in recycled paper and using 100% recycled paper bags for take-away. Our paper ribbons replace another environmental hardship, synthetic wrapping ribbon. Although your gift may not look as beautiful as our wrapping has in the past, we ask you to join us in even the smallest efforts to help preserve mother earth.

Whenever possible customers at PREP decline a bag and place items purchased in shopping bags they are already carrying.
